The Harvesters

The Harvesters

Americana, Old Time and Bluegrass songs, tunes and hard-shoe dancing. With that authentic atmosphere of the Appalachian Mountains and the sounds of the Southern States intimately intertwined with instrumental integrity, The Harvesters deliver a performance to savour.
Blend the strong rhythms of Mountain Music with a light flavour of Blues, add in some Bluegrass, sprinkle in some Gospel and top with classic songs from legendary artists and you have a musical cocktail best served cool and long.
Next add some mood. The soundscape changes effortlessly as Guitar and Banjo combine with Dobro, Slide Steel Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, 12-string Cittern, Bouzouki and Concertina. Or perhaps drop in some fleet-footed flatfooting to provide the rhythmic backdrop? The beat goes on with Cajon, spoons, bodhran and assorted fruit-shaped shakers!
We’ve performed for Her Majesty Queen, other Royal and Noble guests and we could be just the act you’re looking for? We may have been around the UK Folk and Bluegrass scene for a number of years but we’ve kept abreast of the latest musical tastes, embraced change and maintained a youthful attitude and approach to our music. What’s more, we have years of experience of playing in every kind of venue imaginable, both large and small, and have a relaxed, confident and reassuring manner. We have a reputation for being reliable, innovative and, above all, energetic!
Sue sings beautifully, dances and plays Banjo, Concertina, Cajon, Bodhran, spoons and various other items of percussion. Ian sings, dances and plays Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Bouzouki, 10- and 12-stringed Citterns, Mandolin, Dulcimer and a wicked Old-Time Fiddle. He also writes the original songs, drives the van and runs the occasional Marathon! Bob Powell is a very fine Dobro player and also plays Steel (Tricone) Guitar and Banjo.
Not only do we have a great stage show that has been acclaimed in Festivals and concerts as far away as the USA and New Zealand, Germany and The Falkland Islands, but we also teach Appalachian Flatfooting in workshops from beginner to advanced standard. Our main specialty is in performing at Folk Festivals and Clubs, Concerts and Corporate events with our highly-acclaimed, self-penned material and percussive dancing combined with songs, tunes and dances from the American Old Time tradition. Thanks to our association with a number of talented and well-known musicians from the USA over many years, we can confidently present songs from the American Old Time tradition in an authentic and informed way, using our many instrumental skills. Sue and Ian have even sung (briefly) on the stage of The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville TN. Sue plays 5-string banjo, concertina, ukulele, cajon and percussion and Ian plays acoustic and electric guitars, guittern, cittern, mandolins, octave mandola, bouzouki, autoharp and dulcimer. Of course, we both dance in addition to the singing. We have been described by Ira Bernstein as being amongst the finest Appalachian Flatfooters in both the UK and USA, and this dance form features in our repertoire.
