Information about Warwick and the area.
Originally founded in 914, Warwick was strategically located to defend roads and river crossings from Danish invaders.
The famous castle, begun by William the Conqueror in 1068, still stands intact and defiant above the River Avon today.
Although much of the ancient heart of the town was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1694, many buildings of historical interest remain – the Lord Leycester Hospital and St Mary's Church, to name but two – and today's Warwick wears its history proudly while enjoying its role as a 21st-century county town.
There's plenty for the festival-goer and tourist to enjoy in Warwick besides its history – a wide range of pubs, bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets and a great selection of shops, markets and cultural events throughout the year.
We know that many of our festival visitors return to Warwick during the year – why not visit some of these websites to see what Warwick has to offer you – besides an outstanding folk festival, of course!
